Snow Hut Trip
Some of our friends have made repeated trips to over the years to various huts in the mountains. This year Tara really wanted to join them and after some time we finally committed to going, as well. This particular hut was located near Breckenridge, CO. We drove up on a Friday and parked near the ski area and took a short bus ride over to the trailhead. We then began the 2 mile journey carrying almost 60 lbs on our backs with snow shoes up to the hut. As you can see from the picture, it was almost like a blizzard out there and was quite snowy.
The cabin was big enough to sleep 20-25 or so, so it was quite the crew. It was almost all wood and each room had several bunk beds. There was a central wood stove that was used for heat and also to boil snow from outside as our water source.
This was actually a sauna hut that a few of the ladies took advantage of. I actually didn't go in, so I am not sure what it was like in there. The more interesting part was apparently each of the hut's have a caretaker that lives below the hut and is there for any issues and this guy was apparently was not quite shy about not having tons of clothes on in there.
Here is the whole group that ended up staying for the night. We knew maybe 2-3 of the couples, but the rest were friends of Will and Darby who arranged the whole thing. I think Tara had a pretty good time and I enjoyed the hike in and out, but being trapped in a cabin for a day or two is fairly difficult for me. For next year's trip, Tara might go on her own so she can still enjoy it with friends.
