Halloween Friends

Halloween is always a fun time for the guys to head out with the friends.  Here is Gage, Alexander, and Blake all dressed in their finest clothes.  I am not sure there is a real costume happening here besides being a bunch of hoodlums, but it was enough for them to run around and grab candy in the neighborhood.

New Windows

The new windows were finally being installed from Pella!  Our house is nearing the 25–30-year mark and the old windows and sliding glass door were not of a particular high quality to begin with and with aging were just not doing a good job of insulating us from the outside conditions.  I have to say that replacing all of the windows in your house is not for the faint of heart!  The cost just seems so crazy, but thankfully we had a bit of help to give us a 0% loan from my dad to pay for them.  This lowered the cost by several thousands of dollars, and we could just pay him back on a monthly basis.

They did a really good job with taking out the old windows and prepping and sealing all of the new ones in place.  They are much nicer than the old ones, so I think we are happy with the new product.  Hopefully they will keep us warm (or cool in the summers) or years to come.

California Work Trip

I guess if you need someone to fly on one of the corporate jets, I can do it!  One of the responsibilities of the team I am apart of is to complete disaster recovery and business continuity exercises at each of the production plants that we have.  Typically, my coworker Allison and my boss, Mark, do these but with my background in Emergency Medicine and Firefighting, I bring an interesting perspective into these exercises.  So, they decided to bring me along for the trip to California to visit the Lemoore East and Tracy plants.  This is a picture of our own hangar waiting room at the Broomfield/Westminster Metropolitan Airport where our company has several private jets.

It's hard to express how nice it is to park in a small lot and walk your bag into the above waiting room and then a few minutes later walk out to board a plane like this.  If you want to leave a little bit late or early, you just say so and head out.  This plane sits about eight or nine people comfortably.

Here is a picture of what it is like inside the plane.  It has these really nice comfortable seats with basically one person on each side and an aisle down the middle.  There is a bathroom in the back but seems like it might be better just to wait until you land in a smaller plane.

The in-flight meals were pretty nice too!  We had breakfast burritos and a whole fruit and cold plate provided for each of us.

The work exercises were really successful and a great learning experience as we worked through what the response activities would be to some disaster scenarios.  We spent a full day in Lemoore at the plant and then took the plane up to Tracy for the evening to work the next day and then flew home that evening.  While we were working that day, the pilots actually flew home to Colorado and swapped out one plane for a slightly different one to take us home in... which was kind of surprise.  At least they had several to choose from, I guess.  I could get used to flying like this and bypassing big airports completely!

Solar Eclipse

Solar eclipses are always so cool, but they also scare me a bit when the masses are encouraged to stare at the sun for long periods of time.  This solar eclipse came across the southern portion of the United States, but we caught some of it in Colorado.

Here are Tara and the boys looking at the action with the formal viewing glasses.  I also love looking at what the solar eclipse does to the light and shadows through the tree leaves.

New Basement Furniture!

After a long saga, we finally have our new basement furniture!   We actually first bought some furniture about three weeks prior to this and when they came to deliver the three-piece set, we discovered that we couldn't get it down to our basement because the turn at the top of the stairs was too tight!  This sent us back to the drawing board at Furniture Row and we found this lovely four-piece set that had smaller dimensions and we hoped would fit down the stairs.  After some maneuvering, we were successful, and this completed our movie room renovation for this area.

Here is the first movie night with our new couches and everything set up!  We hope that this can become a space that the kids will feel that they can invite friends over to.  It has always been hard with our smaller house to feel like we have enough "cool" places to offer for hanging out.  This has generally limited, along with being somewhat far from where most of their friends live in McKay Landing and the Broadlands, the number of people they seem to invite over.  However, if nothing ends up changing, at least we can enjoy the new space ourselves!

Real and National Team ID Camp

Gage has been practicing a bit with Real Colorado as their keeper training is the best in the state.  This has been an amazing experience and at this particular practice we were informed that several of the scouts for the US Men's National Team were in town for an ID camp later in the week.  I think their general process is to go to both of the MLS Next Teams' practices (Real Colorado & Colorado Rapids) and take the top 10 or so players from each team to pull into a special ID camp.

This is a picture towards the end of practice with Gage in goal.  I think he is still getting to know lots of the team members but is working hard to get better and raise his level of play.

After completing the practice earlier in the week, Clint game me a call the next day and said that they had an opening at the ID camp and he wanted to know if Gage could make it out to Dick's Sporting Good field in about three hours!!  This was a bit crazy as Gage was currently sitting at school in class and had no knowledge that this was coming.  So, I quickly texted him and actually Gage was a bit caught off guard and hesitant.  After some discussion we decided it was a pretty unique opportunity, so I jumped over and pulled him out of class and we headed down to a three-hour ID camp for the Men's National Team at Dicks Sporting Good field.  It was all MLS Next players and Gage and you can't go in and watch so this is the best picture I got of the goalies warming up.  In the end, it was a pretty amazing opportunity and experience for Gage.  I think part of this is so weird for us because we have played competitive soccer for a while, but this new ultra-competitive level is just new and different for us.  Gage is also still just trying to figure out how much he is into it.  He has all the natural ability and physicality to be successful at that level, it is just a decision more about what he wants to do.
